Video Call Hypnotherapy for Addiction
Have you ever wondered why some people become addicted to certain substances or behaviours while others with similar exposure to the substances or behaviours don’t?
The reason for this is very straightforward; the addictive substance or behaviour does something of importance for the people that end up become addicted. The substance or behaviour becomes a metaphoric “crutch” for the people that become addicted. The people with similar exposure to the addictive substances or behaviours that do not become addicted don’t have the same need for a crutch and thus never become obsessed or addicted.
The specifics of what an addictive substance or behaviour does for each individual addicted person will be different for each person, as each individual has their own unique experience. For this reason, adopting a “cookie cutter” approach to resolving addictions will be less effective than a tailor made approach to resolving addictions. The following guideline is the approach adopted by the Oxford Hypnotherapy Clinic that generally addresses the problem in three phases:
We know it’s a bad idea to ask our clients to stop using the substance or behaviour until the first two phases have been achieved, in the same way as it would be a bad idea (and perhaps a cruel practice) to remove a crutch from someone with a leg injury. The crutch serves an important purpose to our client and our client could be motivated to find a different and perhaps more harmful crutch.
We have found that once our clients understand the reason for their addiction, they clients are more motivated towards removing the specific need for their addiction.
Once the need for the addiction is removed, we have found that our clients are more motivated to end the harmful substance use or behaviour.
Our sessions with our clients are private, secret and confidential.

- The first phase would be to identify exactly what the specific substance or behaviour is doing for the client that is so important and to further understand how this need was created.
- The second phase would be to help the client to remove the need for the substance or behaviour once it has been fully analysed and understood.
- The third phase would be to help the client stop using the substance or behaviour.
